You say that the pastel can be worked over and over again, so should I attempt to remove all detail first and if so what is the best way to do this without making a horrible mess??
You can gently lift it off excess with a soft brush. Hold the work at an angle and lightly bush/flick off the surface pastel.
Or tacky it off with blue tack. I have even heard that someone used sticky tape, but I have never tried it and would be afraid to.
Once you have removed a bit of the pastel (don't try to remove all) you can then draw over it again.
If you don't want to remove the pastel, you could try covering it with really soft pastels like Sennelier (rembrants are too hard)

Thanks for the advice Linda. Will definitely give it a go - got nothing to lose at this stage and if I do mess it up it will have been a useful learning exercise. Really enjoyed your post showing Mike's studio. It certainly makes you appreciate how much effort he puts into these invaluable videos! Glad that you had such a great time

Happy to help Jean - when you get back to class (all the best to Brian and his knee), bring it with you and we can discuss further if you like.

Mike and Jenny are wonderful hosts and made me feel right a home. So much so they were in danger of never getting rid of me! Yorkshire, and the part of the Vale where M & J live is beautiful. So green and beautiful countryside. I love the area, and I think if I ever decided to leave Australia I would aim for 'God's own Country' and live somewhere in Yorksire!
