Trees and Rocks - Nature’s Conformity

Trees and Rocks - Nature’s Beautiful Conformity
6x9”
Sketchpaper

This started as a quick sketch but couldn’t help myself and dived into the textures of the trees and rocks.

I figured I should share some WIPS for this drawing. This started as a bigger sketch but as it progressed, I couldn’t resolve the tree on the left. I almost scrapped it because I didn’t like how it was working. I then cropped out the tree and it looks so much better.

Here are three of the progression shots.

What a wonderful subject to have fun with :)

I think your crop was successful, although I still find the left-hand tree to be a little unsettling. I'm not sure why... maybe just because it's so dissimilar to the others. I keep seeing it as an occupied pair of trousers lounging back on the rock :D

In any case, it's a drawing that draws me in and there's a lot to find of interest as I tour around it. And I get the chance to travel from the coolness of the wood into the bright sunlight in the background... which goes on forever! Lovely!

Thank you Mike! I appreciate your comments.

You are right about that left tree! …. and now I can't unsee the trousers  The moment I started to draw that tree, my progression stalled, couldn't figure out how to handle it and almost tossed it. This scene has so much potential that I may re-visit it and remove that tree and let the rock be a bit more prevalent. I will do some sketches and see what I come up with.

Thanks again.

...and I see a face in the middle tree - a mouth and nose!
I didn't see the trousers until Mike pointed them out, but the face first.
Really great textures and movement in the work Diane. And now matter what our fevered imaginations conjour up - they are fantastic trees!

I love drawings that pull me in like this. I want to explore this world that you created.

Me too! I can be digging under a root to look for beetles; walking in the sun down the avenue in the background; or anything in between.

It's a really lovely scene to roam around in.

Your beautiful drawing reminds me a lot of one of my favourite artists, Arthur Rackham and his fabulous trees. I have just spent the morning in a internet rabbithole looking at his works again. Thank you Diane!

Hi, first of all I do feel something to the trees, something inside of me tells that they're majestic belongings to the Earth ...
They're calm, great in their form, speechless watchers of the planet...
Your drawing is full of details, there's interesting foreground and the background just making the whole art more interesting.

Then I started reading those posts, and being triggered to look for faces 😉, I can see druids faces , lol, I love druids too 😁😁😁
Beautiful drawing!
