Time for finishing touches. I’m relying on my instincts and imagination now, not on the reference, I imagine streams of light filtering through the jungle and illuminating my hornbill. Easily done in Procreate!
I add a layer above all other drawing layers, set it to Soft light, and using white as my colour and the Soft Airbrush under Airbrushing, I pull long wide strokes across the casque, the beak and the eye, where I want to draw attention. I like a softer look, but you can play with this until it looks right to your eyes. It’s like turning on the lights!
Then I want to suggest a background in order to bring the hornbill closer to the viewer. Again, easily done in Procreate. I add a layer, this time below all other drawing layers. Using a medium/light grey, I draw long wide strokes still using the Soft Airbrush.
I’ve always liked the look of sepia artwork, so why not try to colourize my drawing to give it that vintage look. What I love about digital drawing is that I can try different things without damaging my original drawing, as long as I make my changes on a separate layer.
I create a layer at the top, just below the Paper Texture layer, and set the blend mode to Color. I fill the layer with a sepia tone I like, and play with the layer opacity until I’m happy with the effect. My opacity in this case is set to 56%.
Here is my final drawing! I know this was a long post, but I hope you enjoyed seeing the process step-by-step, and I’d be happy to answer any questions you may have. Thank you for following along!

It’s amazing how deeply you was digging into the detailed description to do your best, to guide us step by step, like just let us blindly follow your worlds from the beginning to the end ~ to teach us how many possibilities is included within digital art making
Your artwork is very unique, and has yours personal touch to it
Beautiful art indeed Laurene.
Thank you for your time to produce this lesson

Thank you Artur!
. I truly appreciate your encouragement. It’s quite long, I know, but I was trying not to skip too many steps. It’s easier to draw than it is to explain what I’m doing lol.

It is much much easier to enjoy making art for sure
Once you focus on describing what you do … things becoming complicated to explain them the way you’d want to
I’m bad teacher, I’ve never even tried
I don’t know what I’m doing in most cases, I’m just following my feelings and intuition, rather than technical meaning of the process I’m involved
I was drawing digitally old fashion way Laurene.
Just treating the iPad like blank sheet of paper…
Therefore the way you do it’s not too easy for me, it’s engaging the software strength

You know, it’s ok to use a tablet like a sheet of paper! Many wonderful artists use Procreate this way, and to be honest, I often do that too.
But it’s worthwhile to learn at least the basics of how to use layers, I think of it as being similar to when we used tracing paper or tissue paper to sketch something on top of an existing drawing. Do you know what I mean? For example, to add a dog, or a tree or anything else to a composition, this is how we used to try out our ideas. Architects or designers do this too to propose changes to house plans. Nowadays, we do it with layers! Same idea though!
A lot of artists who accept commissions also use layers to propose ideas to their clients. It’s easier to make a change when the client requests one too. You can even use layers to test different colours without affecting your original drawing or painting.

Re: Rhinoceros Hornbill
Just to take advantage of the flexibility and creativity that comes with digital drawing, I love to experiment with lighting which in turn changes the mood of a piece completely. Here, I just changed the background layer, increased the highlights on the beak, and added a little shadow to the lower right-hand corner to create a much more menacing mood, I think.

The three dimensional effect, the background, everything is complimenting each other ...

Thanks Artur, especially for taking the time to comment since I know you’re back to your very demanding bus schedule. I hope you can get some time soon to pursue your artwork!PogArt-Ttoo wrote: Wed Mar 05, 2025 3:13 pm That's perfectly looking artwork to my eyes Laurene.

Being active on this forum is a big problem, since my login is recognised as a spam, and I'm being blocked off, can't post easily my comments or my posts ...
It's a bit of effort to post anything you see.
Sometimes I'm not blocked at all, other time I can't post for days...
Upsetting is, whenever I see new comment, new post or else ~ I can not respond.
To do so I’m writing my answer elsewhere and I’m saving the answer, to be able copy/paste it ~ when I’m not blocked off
Sometime you wondering WHY you can not see the photos attached …
This is exactly why
Sometime I’m lucky to copy/paste my new post ~ but I’m immediately being blocked off then, so I have to wait for another opportunity to update my post with photos
This is why my answers are usually late a bit
