Well Laurene, the original tales were never really intended for children. They were collected as folk stories for adults. The Grimm Brothers wanted to record them before the oral tales were lost. Many were told to them by their neighbor Dorchen Wild, who Williem eventually married! Like many oral stories there are many different variants on similar tales. Over the years they have been watered down and sanitized for children. Over the six editions or so the Grimm Brothers edited and altered the tales, lengthening them and expanding or changing them.We would traumatize children nowadays with the original tales!
