You say that the pastel can be worked over and over again, so should I attempt to remove all detail first and if so what is the best way to do this without making a horrible mess??
You can gently lift it off excess with a soft brush. Hold the work at an angle and lightly bush/flick off the surface ...

A few of my students actually use an electronic eraser to lift out whisker and white lines cleanly. You can get them in art stores, they are like a pen with an eraser tip that spins. So you can just brrrrrrrrrrrr a line across where you want and the spin does all the work.
Word of caution though ...

aw, just give it a go Muffit. Try a section of the elephant hide just to play with technique and tones. Consider it practice and don't try to 'make art', just learn from it.

fyi there is a fabric video on the forum that might answer your question. Because the image you are using doesn't hold much information for you, you need to decide yourself what fabric you wish to portray. Same with the metal chain mail.
