Re: Tonal drawing #3: California Blue oak

I used to be different, I mean my approach was to draw single leaves (lol). It took me a while to change my mind and start thinking of having a bigger picture in my mind ;) I think you're both correct. In my opinion... You need masses containing only tonal variations in a distant background tree. M...

STUDIO WORKSHOPS 2024

After ten weeks of Cluster Headaches (migraine) at the start of this year, I decide to not run Studio Workshops. But the clusters are often two or more years apart... So, we're back in business for 2024. FOUNDATION : APRIL 6/7 (5 seats remaining) This covers all the basic techniques, so it suits new...

Re: Tonal drawing #3: California Blue oak

This is super - and the timing is perfect... given that I'm slowly putting together the DRAWING TREES video.

I think it's an excellent example of a tree as seen as an artist, rather than the "foliage on a stick" that others might see. :D

Re: “Good and Evil” eOils study

I don't believe in using the word 'cheat'... I also believe that if any of the old masters had had these tools at their disposal, they would not have hesitated to embrace them. I most certainly agree with that. Digital is a tool like any other. And, as you said, it's just a fancy - and very versati...

Re: "Silent Witness"

Slowly the skull starting to show off its very detailed areas that I’m struggling to follow precisely 😉👍 I don't think you need to follow it precisely. In fact, what you're doing looks perfectly OK to me. I was struck by the fact that it appears to be detailed, and impressed by the level of detail ...

One of our members - and my chief test pilot for the videos - made a start... but there's a long way to go........

I'll see what I can do as time allows. ;)

Re: Failing to achieve darker tones

…I am still on the basic videos so that video was still a long way ahead! Not so. :) It's a video I made for YouTube and not part of the Beginners section. I'm beginning to think I should be putting a video index together. There are now 60+ videos, and even I can't recall what's in each one....

Re: Failing to achieve darker tones

As a complete beginner, this post poses the same question I was going to ask and also gives me some answers (yet to be applied). So I just wanted to post that it may be helpful to beginners to add something to the videos about shine and fixatives, Thanks, Brenda. Shine and fixatives? Already covere...

...or the light source is very large. Also, the light side shows no fall off of the lights as it descends the wall. I'm just going to comment on that first. You could consider the light to be large because the model was small. And because the model was small, there is very unlikely to be any fall o...
