Re: Layering?

I’ve watched the layering vid and a little confused as to what the difference is between layering and burnishing. You're not the first to ask. And I've asked questions about it myself in the past, too. ;) And the answer is: there is no difference between layering and burnishing . :o Except… the int...

Re: Tonal Shading House Exercise

What if one can’t draw the house in respective to even get started on the shading exercise? Sigh. Frustrating. Well, first, it doesn't matter, because that really doesn't affect the shading. And, I'd already thought of that ;) - if you were taking the course - because you can print out the house ou...

The recipient loves it so far, what's telling me I'm on the right path 😊😊😊
All looking good. And the left-hand dog has a really solid feeling about it now.

I'm not all surprised the client is loving it.

Re: Bestiary Mechanica

There isn't much left for me to say except.......

Your talent and imagination amazes and enthrals me. I simply love every single element - from the Hokusai waves, to the sailing ship, to the sea serpent.

And I can't help but feel that you have an enormous amount of fun creating these works.

Re: Failing to achieve darker tones

When I did the first exercises -shading the house model, for instance - I found it almost impossible to go as dark as the demo. Did anybody run into the same issue? No. Oh, you wanted more? :) ...there's no way I can draw THAT dark squares with a 4B pencil... I filled in the squares with the...

Re: grass method 1

Here are the results after several attempts using method 1 for drawing grass...Any other suggestions, other than studying actual grass and more practice? Well, I think you would benefit from studying actual grass and more practice. :D Sorry! I couldn't resist the temptation. I think you're o...

Re: Trial Posting

A test? It worked! :) As I explained elsewhere, there are only two limitations: Images must not wider than 1000 pixels (1000px) Image file size must not exceed 1MB First try resizing to 1000px wide, if it exceeds that. If the file size exceeds 1MB, then check the resolution. If it's, say, 300ppi (pi...

And it worked! :D

Now we just have to teach you how to adjust photos to show whites correctly. ;)

Not that there's anything wrong with your image, but just so we can appreciate your lovely drawing even more.

Re: New Dog Portrait

Mike, I am about to start on drawing the attached dog portrait for a friend. Do you have any overall comments/tips with regard to how to achieve the fur texture for this specific project? Personally, I'd do two things before drawing began. The first is to describe to myself what I'm seeing - given ...

Re: WELCOME!

Welcome to DWM, Claire! I often think (as a pastelist and watercolorist) of the old adage “color gets all the credit, but value does all the work” and never can that be more true than in a medium absent of color. That is so true! And my belief is that colour can get in the way - be a distraction. Wh...
